Abstract

About three billion people in the world make up the base of the economic pyramid or BOP (Base of Pyramid) - the poorest part. Mobile banking (m-banking) can provide financial inclusion, improving BOP living conditions, excluded from formal financial activities, proliferating studies on its adoption. This study analyzed 58 articles published between 2008 and 2018 on the adoption of m-banking by BOP. It was found that the studies map theories regarding the intentions of adoption, use, diffusion and impact of m-banking; discuss telephony operators, banks, agents and their relations with BOP and the relationship between infrastructure and adoption of m-banking and financial inclusion. They also address legislation and relationships between development, financial inclusion and the adoption of m-banking / m-payment. Finally, the research agenda is proposed.
