Abstract

Increasing technology and reliability in the aviation industry may result in complacent behavior among crews, which, in turn, may impact performance in complex situations, generating surprises. These instinctive reactions can compromise the understanding and response of pilots facing unexpected events. Through an exploratory qualitative approach, this work seeks to identify common points and ideas regarding the “startle effect” in pilots. This paper aims to present a working definition of startle, addressing processes and its’ different levels. The discussion approaches the problem through the lenses of sensemaking and Recongition Primed Decision (RPD), demonstrating the need to integrate decision making and critical cues. Strategies for a new training philosophy for diminishing "surprise" and improving resilience are discussed.
